Biography
Kyle Fitzgerald was born on November 11, 1966, and grew up in Texas in a culture where football, discipline, and public service were deeply intertwined. After graduating from Texas A&M University as a member of the Corps of Cadets, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. Fitzgerald served with the First Cavalry Division during Operation Desert Storm from 1989 to 1993, an experience that shaped his leadership style and reinforced his belief in accountability, teamwork, and perseverance.
Following his military service, Fitzgerald returned to Texas and began a career in education and coaching, working as a teacher and assistant football coach at Jacksonville High School from 1993 to 1999. His ability to connect with young athletes and build disciplined, competitive teams quickly earned him recognition across the state. In 2000 he was hired as the head football coach at Gilmer High School, where he built one of the most respected programs in Texas high school football. During his fourteen-year tenure, Fitzgerald led Gilmer to three UIL State Championships in 2004, 2009, and 2014, cementing his reputation as a demanding but inspiring leader who emphasized character as much as winning.
Fitzgerald eventually moved to the college ranks, serving as an assistant football coach at Southern Methodist University from 2015 to 2017 and later at the University of Arkansas from 2018 to 2019. In 2020 he was named head football coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he helped elevate the program’s profile and competitiveness. After several successful seasons, he stepped away from coaching following UTSA’s victory in the Frisco Bowl, closing a career that had spanned three decades and influenced hundreds of players.
After retiring from coaching, Fitzgerald transitioned into public service. Drawing on his reputation as a community leader and mentor, he was elected to the Texas State Legislature in 2024. In Austin he quickly developed a reputation as a pragmatic, energetic lawmaker who approached politics much like he had approached football: by building strong teams, focusing on clear goals, and refusing to accept complacency. His legislative priorities centered on education, veterans’ issues, and strengthening youth athletics programs across the state.
Even after leaving the sidelines, football has remained central to Fitzgerald’s life. His daughter, Kylie Fitzgerald, became the owner of the Richmond Capitols in the Dominion Football League, a rapidly growing professional league based in Virginia. With the league now seeking to expand beyond its original footprint, Fitzgerald has emerged as a leading candidate to serve as its next commissioner. His combination of military leadership, championship-level coaching experience, and legislative background has positioned him as a natural figure to guide the Dominion Football League into a new era of national growth.
