Biography
Born in 1978 in Corpus Christi, Texas, State Senator Elizabeth "Valkyrie" Hayes represents Texas Senate District 16, covering North Dallas and the Metroplex. A fourth-generation Texan and the daughter of a Vietnam-era phantom pilot, Hayes grew up steeped in the state's military traditions before forging her own path as a disciplined and decorated leader. She was a standout athlete in her youth, winning the 1996 Texas State Championship in the 400m dash, a feat that presaged her intense drive and competitive nature. She earned her commission from the United States Naval Academy in 2000 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and subsequently completed her Master of Business Administration at the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Cox School of Business.
Hayes’s public service is defined by her twenty-year career as a Naval Aviator in the United States Navy, where she earned the callsign "Valkyrie." Earning her "Wings of Gold" in 2002, she selected the strike fighter pipeline and quickly distinguished herself as a tactical expert. Her military service spanned two major conflicts; she flew 55 combat sorties off the USS Harry S. Truman during the opening phases of Operation Iraqi Freedom and later deployed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. It was during this later campaign that she was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with a Combat "V" for leading a division of Super Hornets through severe weather and heavy anti-aircraft fire to neutralize an ISIS artillery position in Syria. She concluded her military career as the Executive Officer of VFA-106, retiring as a Commander (O-5) in 2020 after sustaining career-ending spinal compression injuries from decades of high-G maneuvering.
Upon returning to civilian life, Hayes settled in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas, intending to work in the private aerospace sector. However, her transition was marked by frustration with the bureaucratic inefficiencies plaguing state services, particularly regarding veteran healthcare and urban infrastructure. Viewing the contrast between Dallas’s corporate efficiency and Austin’s legislative gridlock as unacceptable, she launched a campaign for the Texas State Senate in 2022. Running as a pragmatic Texas Democrat, she positioned herself as a "Boardroom Warrior," appealing to moderate voters with a platform focused on logistics, infrastructure reliability, and accountability rather than culture wars.
Since taking office, Senator Hayes has established a reputation as a fierce critic of government waste and a champion for practical solutions. She is best known for authoring the Texas Veterans’ Spinal and Orthopedic Rural Access Act, legislation designed to bridge the gap between private hospital capacity and veteran needs. She continues to live in Dallas, where she remains active in the aviation community, bringing the same precision to the Texas Legislature that she once brought to the skies.
