MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - The Delta Blues announced today that offensive lineman Rico Martinez has signed a two year contract extension worth $72,500 per season, keeping one of the league’s most physical blockers in Memphis for the next two seasons.

A native of Yuma, Arizona, Martinez built his career around toughness, discipline and relentless preparation. A standout wrestler in high school, he carried that physical style onto the football field, emerging at the junior college level before transferring to Arizona State.

At right guard, Martinez developed a reputation as a punishing run blocker with an edge at the point of attack. His willingness to finish blocks and play through contact has made him a natural fit for the identity the Blues are continuing to build.

“Rico sets the tone for the way we want to play,” an organization spokesperson said. “He is tough, dependable and completely committed to his teammates. He does not need to be the loudest player in the room to be a leader.”

Martinez has earned respect inside the locker room through a leadership style based on preparation and consistency. Quiet off the field, he has become known for demanding excellence from himself and refusing to take plays or practices lightly.

His return also provides continuity for an that has placed greater emphasis on the running game this season. With No. 3 overall draft pick Devin Chapa having rushed for 1,111 yards and 17 touchdowns thus far this year, Martinez gives the Blues an established interior presence capable of helping clear the way.

The new deal carries a total value of $145,000 over two seasons.
