Dominion Football League Rebrands as DFL, Announces National Expansion and New Competitive Structure for Season 5

3/17/2026, 8:06:35 AM · Kyle Fitzgerald

The Commissioner’s Office today announced that the Dominion Football League will officially rebrand as the DFL beginning in Season 5, marking the league’s expansion beyond its Virginia roots into a broader national footprint. Founded as a Virginia-based league, the DFL has grown rapidly over its first four seasons. With new teams in Washington, D.C., Louisville, Memphis, and Tampa Bay, the league now spans multiple major markets across the eastern United States. Season 5 introduces a two-conference structure. The Commonwealth Conference includes Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, and Roanoke, preserving the league’s original identity. The National Conference consists of Charlotte, D.C., Louisville, Memphis, and Tampa Bay, representing the league’s expansion era. Each team will play a 13-game regular season. Teams will face their four conference opponents twice and all five teams from the opposite conference once. This format emphasizes conference competition while maintaining full league exposure. Week 13 will serve as Rivalry Week, highlighted by the Norfolk Admirals and Virginia Beach Breakers meeting in the final game of the regular season. Additional matchups include Richmond vs Charlottesville, Roanoke vs Charlotte, Louisville vs Memphis, and D.C. vs Tampa Bay. The postseason will feature four teams: both conference champions and two wildcards. Two semifinal games will determine the finalists, followed by the DFL Championship Game. “This is a defining moment for the league,” Commissioner Fitzgerald said. “We’re building something bigger while staying true to what made the DFL work from the start.”
