Lyrics

September 4, 2026

Bigger than it ought to be\
\
\[Intro: warm acoustic guitar, playful bottleneck slide, easy country-blues groove\]

\[Verse 1\]\
Down in Gulfport by the square\
There’s a concrete dollar sitting there\
Been taking sun and hurricane rain\
Long enough for folks to know its name\
Kids grow up and bring their kids\
Stand in nearly the same place they did\
Funny what a few good years can mean\
To something bigger than it ought to be

\[Slide response\]

\[Verse 2\]\
Nobody planned for it to mean this much\
Just concrete, weather, paint and touch\
Till enough years passed and enough folks came\
And everybody started calling it by name\
Postcards faded, fashions changed\
Storefronts closed and streets got rearranged\
Still that old round thing kept company\
Getting bigger than it ought to be

\[Chorus\]\
Bigger than it ought to be\
More than concrete by the sea\
Funny how a thing gets woven\
Into what a town believes\
Could be old, could be new\
Could look strange to me and you\
But give folks time and something they can keep\
It gets bigger than it ought to be

\[Instrumental turnaround: light bottleneck slide over acoustic rhythm\]

\[Verse 3\]\
Then another town built one of its own\
Gave another roadside place a name to know\
Now travelers stop at both along the way\
Everybody’s got a story they can say\
One has years and one has shine\
Both got people calling one of ’em mine\
I don’t reckon I need to referee\
Something bigger than it ought to be

\[Chorus\]\
Bigger than it ought to be\
More than concrete by the sea\
Funny how a thing gets woven\
Into what a town believes\
Could be old, could be new\
Could mean something different too\
But give folks time and something they can keep\
It gets bigger than it ought to be

\[Bridge: arrangement drops back to acoustic and slide\]\
Could be a water tower\
Could be a painted wall\
Could be a courthouse clock\
Nobody else would notice at all\
Could be something foolish\
Till enough people care\
Then one day you look around\
And it belongs there

\[Final Chorus\]\
Bigger than it ought to be\
A little strange, a little proud\
Something worth remembering\
When somebody comes around\
Let one town keep the old one\
Let the other raise something new\
There’s room enough along the road\
For more than one thing to belong to you

Bigger than it ought to be\
More than anybody planned\
A little piece of somewhere\
Folks keep carrying in their hands\
You don’t have to pick a winner\
You just have to stop and see\
What people choose to love\
Gets bigger than it ought to be

\[Outro: acoustic guitar, soft slide response\]

Funny what stays

Funny what we keep

\[Final slide note\]

Bigger than it ought to be
