Lyrics

March 16, 2026

There’s a bend in the road past the county line
Where the weeds grow high and the pines grow blind
Got a shoulder full of gravel, a sky gone black
And a voice down low sayin’ don’t look back
I was drivin’ too slow, then I was drivin’ too fast
Tryin’ to outrun a ghost from my own damn past
Then I heard that laugh where the tall grass switched
Like the devil in the ditch

He don’t wear no horns, don’t carry no chain
He comes like a memory and he leaves like rain
He knows your first lie and your favorite sin
Knows the shape your heart takes when it’s givin’ in
He waits by the culvert where the runoff runs
With a mouth full of mercy and a loaded tongue
And he smiles real wide when your resolve gets thin
Like he’s always gonna win

There’s a devil in the ditch
Down where the black water slides
Devil in the ditch
Waitin’ where the good road dies
He don’t drag you down, he just talks you near
With a voice like smoke and a hand like fear
There’s a devil in the ditch
And he knows me by name

Found my old boots by the riverbank mud
Wet to the laces and streaked with blood
Could’ve been rust, could’ve been clay
Could’ve been the price of a wrong turn made
Lord, the moon hung low like a courthouse light
And the frogs all sang like they knew I was right
Every bad choice I ever stitched
Had a devil in the ditch

There’s a devil in the ditch
Down where the black water slides
Devil in the ditch
Waitin’ where the good road dies
He don’t drag you down, he just talks you near
With a voice like smoke and a hand like fear
There’s a devil in the ditch
And he knows me by name

I said, “Leave me be, I’ve paid my due”
He said, “Child, I ain’t done with you”
I said, “I found God in a roadside hymn”
He said, “God may listen, but you’ll still come dim”
Then the wind kicked up and the cane grass bent
Like the whole night knew just what he meant
And I stood there still while the dark clouds stitched
Round the devil in the ditch

There’s a devil in the ditch
Where the backroad breaks in two
Devil in the ditch
Sayin’ “I’ve been waitin’ on you”
He don’t carry fire, he don’t rattle chains
He just wears your sorrow and he speaks your shame
There’s a devil in the ditch
And tonight he sounds like truth

Yeah, tonight he sounds like truth
Down in the ditch
Lord, down in the ditch
