\[Intro\]

Yeah

He came in just before close\
Work shirt, dust on the boots\
Said he needed an old name gone

\[Verse 1\]\
Name on his chest in a crooked blue line\
Twenty-four with a needle and too much time\
I said, “Ex-wife?” He said, “No, my kid”\
Then stared at the wall like he wished that he did

Seventeen years old, left home after dark\
Said she’d meet two friends by the edge of the park\
Car turned up empty by a truck stop fence\
Keys in the cup holder, purse underneath

No blood, no note, no reason to run\
Just a mother calling till the morning came up\
And a father driving roads till the tank hit red\
Learning every place a body could be left

Creek beds, cornfields, motel lots\
Every rumor got a map, every liar got watched\
He kept flyers in the cab and a light by the phone\
Like hope was a job he could do on his own

Said every fence post looked like somebody waiting\
Every coat in the distance had the shape he was chasing\
He’d slow down hard, roll the window, call her name\
Then see black wings lift and feel stupid again

\[Chorus\]\
Blackbird on the fence\
For a second, it was you\
Every shadow in the fog\
Every figure passing through

Blackbird on the fence\
Then the wings cut loose\
Hope can keep a man alive\
Hope can ruin him too

(Still looking)\
(Still looking)

\[Verse 2\]\
Years made a weapon out of not knowing why\
He found a man in town that was easy to despise\
Bad name, bad temper, questioned once by the law\
Daniel built the rest from the gaps that he saw

Followed him home, broke glass in his drive\
Told every bar in the county, “That bastard knows why”\
Made hate feel useful, made rage feel clean\
Put a face on the space where his daughter had been

That man lost work, packed up, disappeared\
Then the evidence cleared him fifteen years later\
Daniel said it flat, never asked me to forgive him\
“I needed someone guilty more than I needed the truth given”

Then a call from a county three states away\
Bones found years back with no name on the grave\
New test, old file, one final match\
And the whole world ended in a four-minute chat

Everybody said closure like a door had shut\
Like a father could sweep fifteen years into dust\
They brought her home, but he couldn’t explain\
Why finding what was left didn’t give back her name

Now strangers see Emily over his heart\
Ask who she is, and tear him apart\
He said, “I’m tired of deciding in grocery-store lines\
How much of my daughter belongs to someone else’s time”

\[Chorus\]\
Blackbird on the fence\
For a second, it was you\
Every shadow in the fog\
Every figure passing through

Blackbird on the fence\
Then the wings cut loose\
Hope can keep a man alive\
Hope can ruin him too

(Still looking)

\[Verse 3\]\
He didn’t want angels, dates, or a cross\
Said, “Don’t make it pretty. Don’t clean up the loss”\
So I drew one bird on a weathered fence rail\
County road behind it disappearing pale

Worked the old letters into feather and grain\
Left just enough underneath to remember the name\
Black ink settling where the blue used to sit\
Not erased, just made nobody else’s business

The machine ran low while he talked about home\
Her room packed away but her coat still hung\
His wife moved west, said the house made her sick\
He stayed ’cause leaving felt too much like admitting it

When I finished, he stood with his shirt in his hand\
Looked at that bird like he finally understood it\
I asked, “Does it help?” He said, “No, not a bit”\
“But now they gotta ask before I give her to them”

He paid cash, left quiet, door clicked behind\
I watched his truck disappear past the county-line sign\
Then wrote one sentence down before I killed the light:

Some names don’t fade\
They just learn how to hide

\[Bridge\]\
(drums thin out; strings rise)

He drove every road\
He blamed the wrong man\
He buried his daughter\
Then went home when they asked

No lesson\
No peace\
No clean way through

Just a bird on a fence\
That kept turning into you

\[Final Chorus\]\
Blackbird on the fence\
For a second, it was you\
Every shadow in the fog\
Every figure passing through

Blackbird on the fence\
Then the whole sky moved\
Hope kept him searching\
Hope took fifteen years too

(Still looking)\
(Still looking)

\[Outro\]\
\[piano only\]

He covered up the name.

Not the years.
