Legislation

From hopper to enacted law, here is how state bills move.

Where to work

Browse and act on bills in /politics/state-legislature. Bill pages include debate threads, tallies, and action buttons (vote, sign/veto if governor).

Lifecycle

  1. Hopper → Scheduled: bill is filed and placed on the calendar.
  2. Debate: members discuss in the bill space; default 72h window.
  3. Voting: opens after debate; default 72h voting window.
  4. Result: seat-weighted tally sets status to passed or failed when the window closes.
  5. Governor review: passed bills move to the governor for up to 72h.
  6. Outcome: sign (enacted), veto (goes to override voting), or pocket pass (auto-enact after deadline).
  7. Override (planned): 2/3 threshold during override_voting if vetoed.

Voting rules

  • Seat-weighted: each legislator’s vote weight matches their seat size.
  • One vote per member per bill; you may change it while voting is open.
  • Results post automatically when the voting window closes.

Governor actions

  • Sign: bill enacts immediately.
  • Veto: bill enters override_voting (planned 2/3 threshold).
  • No action: after the review deadline, the bill pocket-passes and enacts.

Where to go next

Tips & Tricks

  • Use bill pages to summarize intent and amendments during debate.
  • Watch vote timers; late swings can flip seat-weighted outcomes.
  • Coordinate with the governor before passage to avoid surprises.

FAQ

  • Can I change my vote? Yes, while voting is open.
  • What is pocket pass? Governor inaction enacts passed bills after the deadline.
