Biography
Anthony “Tony” Bellanova grew up in a working-class Italian-American family in Albemarle County just outside Charlottesville, Virginia. His father worked construction while his mother ran a small neighborhood deli, and from an early age Tony learned the value of hard work—and the importance of knowing the right people.
After finishing high school, Tony skipped college and jumped straight into the business world. He started small, managing a struggling sports bar near the University of Virginia campus. Through relentless hustle, smart negotiations with suppliers, and a knack for building relationships with customers, Tony slowly built a small empire of bars and restaurants across the Charlottesville area.
Tony developed a reputation as a larger-than-life local figure—generous with friends, fiercely loyal to his employees, and always ready to buy a round for the room. But along with his success came rumors. Some whispered that Tony’s early financing came from questionable sources, and others joked that he “knew people who knew people.” Tony never addressed the gossip directly, usually laughing it off with a shrug and another drink.
For years Tony dreamed of bringing professional sports to Charlottesville. In 2025, when discussions began about creating a new football league in Virginia, Tony jumped at the opportunity. He became one of the founding owners of the Charlottesville Scholars, one of the original four teams in the Dominion Football League. To Tony, the team represented more than business—it was proof that Charlottesville could stand alongside bigger cities in the world of professional sports.
Although the Dominion Football League started modestly, the early success of its first seasons and the expansion to six Virginia teams quickly drew national attention. As the league prepares to expand nationally in 2026, Tony finds himself at the center of something far bigger than he originally imagined.
Despite his flashy personality and lingering rumors about his past, those who know Tony best say he’s simply a passionate local businessman who loves his city, loves football, and occasionally drinks a little more bourbon than he probably should. Beneath the bravado is a man determined to prove that the Charlottesville Scholars—and the Dominion Football League—can become a lasting part of American sports.
