Biography
Tom Mercer was born on March 14, 1968, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to Edward Mercer, a small business owner, and Patricia Mercer, a public school teacher. Raised in a middle-class family, Mercer developed an interest in business and manufacturing at an early age while helping at his father's industrial supply company.
He graduated from Grimsley High School in Greensboro before attending University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. During college, Mercer worked part-time in warehouse operations and sales, gaining firsthand experience in supply chain management and industrial distribution.
Following graduation in 1990, Mercer joined a regional manufacturing firm as a management trainee. Over the next decade, he held positions in operations, sales, and strategic planning, earning a reputation as an effective manager capable of improving efficiency and profitability.
In 2001, Mercer became Vice President of Operations for Carolina Manufacturing Group, overseeing facilities throughout North Carolina and Virginia. Under his leadership, the company modernized production processes and expanded into new markets.
In 2008, Mercer led a group of investors in acquiring a struggling industrial components company in Greensboro. The acquisition became the foundation for Mercer Industrial Solutions.
As CEO, Mercer transformed the company from a regional supplier with fewer than 300 employees into a nationally recognized manufacturing and logistics enterprise employing more than 4,000 people across multiple states. The company expanded its operations through strategic acquisitions, investments in automation, and workforce training initiatives.
Mercer's leadership philosophy emphasizes long-term growth, customer relationships, and employee retention. He is known for advocating apprenticeship programs and partnerships with community colleges to develop skilled workers for the manufacturing sector.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Mercer has been active in civic organizations throughout the Greensboro area. He has served on the boards of local economic development organizations, educational foundations, and charitable initiatives focused on workforce training.
Throughout his career, Mercer has received numerous honors, including:
- North Carolina Business Leader of the Year
- Piedmont Triad Economic Development Award
- Manufacturing Innovation Leadership Award
- Distinguished Alumni Award from University of North Carolina at Greensboro
- Community Impact Award from regional business organizations
Mercer resides in Greensboro with his wife, Katherine Mercer. The couple has three adult children. Outside of business, he enjoys golf, fly fishing, mentoring young entrepreneurs, and supporting North Carolina college athletics.
Known for maintaining a relatively low public profile despite his business success, Mercer frequently credits his achievements to the employees, customers, and communities that have contributed to the growth of Mercer Industrial Solutions.
"Strong companies are built by strong people. If you invest in your workforce, your community, and your values, success follows naturally."- Tom Mercer
