Biography
Ryan Tebbett built his coaching identity the hard way—through small programs, limited resources, and a relentless focus on discipline and detail. A native of the Bangor area Maine, Tebbett played defensive back at a Division III school before transitioning quickly into coaching, where his analytical mind stood out early.
He began his career as a graduate assistant at the Husson University, working primarily with defensive backs. There, he developed the foundation of what would become his calling card: structured zone coverage schemes designed to eliminate explosive plays and force offenses into long, mistake-prone drives.
Tebbett later earned a secondary coach role at the University of Maine, where he refined his system against higher-level competition. His defensive backs units consistently ranked near the top of the conference in pass efficiency defense, despite often lacking elite recruiting classes.
His breakout came during a stint as Defensive Coordinator at University of New Hampshire, where he installed a hybrid zone scheme blending Cover 3 match principles with disguised two-high shells. Under his leadership, the defense became known for:
- Limiting plays over 20+ yards
- Forcing quarterbacks into checkdowns
- Generating turnovers through disguised coverage rotations
Tebbett’s defenses weren’t flashy—but they were brutally efficient. Opposing offenses frequently struggled with patience, leading to mistakes late in drives.
After several successful seasons at the FCS level, Tebbett transitioned to a Group of Five role with University at Buffalo as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach. There, he proved his system could scale, helping reduce explosive pass plays dramatically in conference play.
Known as a workaholic and film junkie, Tebbett spends countless hours breaking down tendencies and scripting situational coverages. His players respect his clarity and preparation, though his demanding style can wear on less disciplined rosters.
Now entering the professional ranks, Ryan Tebbett profiles as a DFL-ready Defensive Coordinator whose scheme is built for modern pass-heavy offenses. His philosophy is simple but effective:
“Make offenses earn every yard—and eventually, they’ll give you the game.”
