Biography
Frederick Hildebrand Bartel, better known to millions as “The Iron Patriot,” has undergone one of the most remarkable reinventions in modern American life — from NFL linebacker and wrestling icon to Governor of Oklahoma. Born in Stillwater and adopted by ranchers in Yukon, Bartel rose from humble beginnings to national fame through the twin engines of athleticism and showmanship. His larger-than-life personality once filled stadiums; now, it fills press briefings and State Capitol chambers.
Following his MBA from Harvard and years of entrepreneurial success running Plains Sports & Entertainment, Bartel reemerged in the public eye during the 2010s as a firebrand conservative commentator. His unapologetically blunt rhetoric, combined with a populist flair, made him a favorite among Oklahoma’s rural and working-class voters who saw in him a rare blend of celebrity swagger and cowboy grit. Bartel officially entered politics in late 2024, framing his campaign as “a fight for faith, freedom, and hard work.”
His outsider appeal and relentless retail politicking powered him to victory in the March 2025 gubernatorial election. Now serving his first term, Governor Bartel has styled himself as both a “protector of Oklahoma values” and a showman of state leadership. His rallies often feature the same music and bravado that defined his wrestling career, with the Governor known to quote both Reagan and John Parr in the same breath.
As governor, Bartel’s administration has emphasized deregulation, expanded energy production, and strong support for law enforcement. His leadership has also been marked by frequent clashes with the federal government over environmental and education mandates, earning him a reputation as one of the nation’s most outspoken conservative executives. Despite occasional controversies and his brash demeanor, his approval among Oklahoma conservatives remains strong, bolstered by his image as a fighter who “doesn’t back down or apologize.”
Off the political stage, Bartel maintains a disciplined lifestyle, rising early to train in his private gym before tending to the animals on his Lake Thunderbird property. He credits his marriage to Ashley Murray and their three daughters for grounding him amid public life’s chaos. Though his critics deride him as a showboat, Bartel insists he’s “just doing what I’ve always done — putting on a show and winning for my team.”
With national conservative groups courting him for higher office and his growing network of allies across red states, Fred Bartel’s political story is far from over. Whether he aims for a second term or something larger, one thing is clear: in Oklahoma politics, the Iron Patriot has found his newest arena.
