Governor Charlene Short is the current Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Born and raised in Fairfax County in a middle-class family with deep roots in public service, Charlene learned early the values of integrity, hard work, and civic duty. Inspired by her grandfather, a World War II veteran, she joined the U.S. Army after graduating from the University of Virginia through its ROTC program. Over a distinguished 25-year military career, she rose to the rank of Brigadier General, commanding logistics and supply operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her leadership was marked by efficiency, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to those under her command. After retiring from the Army, Charlene continued her service in government, earning a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Georgetown University and serving as an advisor at the Pentagon on veterans’ affairs and infrastructure modernization. As a state legislator, Charlene became known for her bipartisan pragmatism. She spearheaded legislation to expand job training programs for veterans, modernize rural broadband, and secure Medicaid expansion across Virginia. Her track record of results and reputation for fairness made her a respected figure in both parties. In 2025, Charlene Short won the governorship in a hard-fought campaign that emphasized infrastructure, veterans’ support, healthcare access, and economic fairness. As Governor, she has focused on delivering results over rhetoric — launching “Rebuild Virginia,” a statewide initiative to modernize roads, bridges, and digital networks; expanding mental health and veterans’ outreach programs; and investing in workforce development to close the gap between education and employment. Governor Short’s leadership style reflects her military background — decisive, disciplined, and mission-driven. She is known for her calm presence during crises and her insistence on accountability in state government. When she’s not governing, Charlene enjoys hiking in Shenandoah National Park, volunteering with veterans’ organizations, and spending time with her husband, Robert Short, a cybersecurity consultant and fellow Army veteran.
