This act requires state agencies, to the extent permitted by federal law, to verify an applicant’s lawful immigration status before awarding specified state-funded public benefits, excluding emergency medical care, public health services, disaster assistance, K–12 education, and other services required by federal law. State and local agencies shall respond to lawful requests from federal immigration authorities, share information only as authorized by law, protect personal data, and provide applicants with notice and an opportunity to correct status-verification errors; nothing in this act authorizes state officials to make immigration arrests or otherwise exercise federal immigration powers.
