Lowenthal schedules Hastings' Northern Border security bill for debate
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Senator Donna Lowenthal (R-Mississippi) announced that she has scheduled the Northern Border Security and Public Safety Coordination Act, introduced by Senator Bob Hastings (R-N.D.), for debate during the October Senate session.
The legislation seeks to strengthen immigration enforcement coordination among federal, state, and local authorities while improving security and screening procedures at ports of entry along the United States' northern border.
“Senator Hastings has brought forward legislation that addresses a fundamental responsibility of the federal government: protecting our borders and keeping dangerous individuals out of our communities,” Lowenthal said. “That responsibility requires more than promises. It requires clear procedures, cooperation between agencies, and measurable results.”
The legislation also includes constitutional and privacy safeguards and requires regular reporting to Congress on implementation, processing times, and coordination outcomes.
“Effective immigration enforcement and respect for constitutional protections are not mutually exclusive,” Lowenthal continued. “We should expect our agencies to identify genuine public-safety threats, work together efficiently, and remain accountable for how they exercise their authority.”
Lowenthal emphasized that the legislation's reporting requirements would help Congress evaluate whether federal resources and enforcement procedures are producing results.
“Americans deserve an immigration system that takes public safety seriously and a government that can demonstrate it is doing its job,” Lowenthal said. “I appreciate Senator Hastings' work on this legislation and look forward to a substantive debate on the Senate floor.”
The Northern Border Security and Public Safety Coordination Act will soon be considered by the full Senate during the October 2026 congressional session.
