Danville DFL team to relocate to Charlotte for Season 5
The Dominion Football League (DFL) and team owner Gary Hurst announced today that the Danville Ironworks will relocate to Charlotte, North Carolina beginning in Season 5. The franchise will compete under a new name, the Charlotte Monarchs, marking a new chapter for the organization as the league enters its first major expansion period.
The move comes as the DFL prepares for its fifth season and expands beyond its original Virginia footprint with the addition of new teams in Louisville, Memphis, Washington, D.C., and Tampa Bay. League officials say the transition to Charlotte reflects the DFL’s continued growth and its commitment to building a strong regional presence across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
“Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country and an outstanding sports market,” said Gary Hurst, owner of the franchise. “As the DFL expands, we believe this move positions the team for long-term success while bringing exciting professional football to a passionate new fanbase. We’re proud to introduce the Charlotte Monarchs and look forward to building a championship culture in the Queen City.”
The team will play its home games at a newly prepared 5,000-seat stadium in Charlotte designed to provide an energetic and intimate football atmosphere for fans. The Monarchs will feature a new identity inspired by Charlotte’s nickname as the “Queen City,” with team colors of royal purple and gold.
The franchise previously competed as the Danville Ironworks during the league’s first four seasons. The organization expressed gratitude to Danville supporters who helped establish the club as one of the DFL’s founding teams.
“Danville played an important role in the early history of this franchise and the DFL,” Hurst said. “We are deeply appreciative of the community, the fans, and everyone who supported the Ironworks during the league’s first seasons.”
The Charlotte Monarchs will begin play in the DFL’s Season 5 schedule, which will be announced later th
