STATEMENT FROM CHARLOTTESVILLE SCHOLARS OWNER TONY BELLANOVA

6/17/2026, 11:29:50 PM · Tony Bellanova

Today is the hardest decision I have ever made as owner of the Scholars.

Effective July 1st, the Charlottesville Scholars will relocate to San Antonio, Texas, and begin play as the San Antonio Scholars for Season 6 of the DFL.

When we launched this franchise, many people thought professional football in Charlottesville was impossible. But this community proved them wrong. You bought tickets, wore our colors, and supported us from the very beginning. Because of you, the Scholars became one of the founding success stories of the DFL.

The league has grown faster than anyone imagined. What started as a small Virginia-based league is now becoming a national competition. As the DFL expands, it has become clear that Charlottesville simply cannot provide the market size, sponsorship opportunities, and revenue necessary for the Scholars to remain competitive long-term.

I want to be clear: Charlottesville did not fail us.

Charlottesville carried us farther than anyone thought possible.

I had two choices. I could keep the team here and watch it slowly fall behind larger markets, or I could make the difficult decision to move the franchise to a city that gives it the resources to compete for championships for years to come.

I chose the future of the franchise.

I know many fans will be disappointed, and some may never forgive me. I understand that. But this decision was not made out of greed. It was made out of responsibility to the players, coaches, staff, and supporters who deserve a team capable of competing at the highest level.

Despite the relocation, I am not leaving Charlottesville. My home remains here. My businesses remain here. My commitment to this community remains here.

The birthplace of the Scholars will always be Charlottesville, Virginia.

No matter where the team plays, no one can take away the memories, the history, or the role this city played in building the DFL.

Thank you for believing in us when nobody else did.
