North Mississippi singer-songwriter Madison Hillman has released “The Courthouse Clock,” a new alt-country and country blues single centered on Oxford, Mississippi’s courthouse square.

According to a press release, the song uses the town’s courthouse clock tower as an observer of everyday life across generations. Its lyrics reference weddings, departures, Friday nights, children leaving home and families returning years later, framing the landmark as a constant presence amid personal change.

“The courthouse in your hometown has just always been there,” Hillman said in the release. “You grow up passing it without thinking much about it, and then one day you realize how many versions of yourself and others it’s watched come and go. I wanted the song to be about that feeling.”

The recording is built around acoustic guitar, bottleneck slide guitar, live drums, bass and Hillman’s alto vocal. The press release describes the arrangement as restrained, with slide guitar carrying much of the song’s emotional weight while leaving room for the narrative lyrics.

Later verses take a more personal direction, according to the release, recalling Hillman’s time passing through Oxford as a teenager with a guitar in her car and her return to the town with a changed understanding of home.

Hillman grew up in Oxford and developed her musical approach through the region’s Delta blues traditions. Her sound combines traditional slide-guitar techniques with contemporary singer-songwriter and Americana influences, often emphasizing spare percussion and story-driven songs.

“The Courthouse Clock” follows several releases that explored different aspects of that style. “Sunflower County Rain” focused on memory and an old house, while “Yazoo Queen” moved toward a louder Delta blues-rock sound. Another recent release, “Two Hundred Fifty Years,” used heavier instrumentation for a reflection on the United States as an unfinished promise.

The new song marks a return to a quieter, contemplative arrangement, according to the release, while keeping the Delta blues textures associated with Hillman’s music.
