Lyrics

August 1, 2026

\[Verse 1\]\
Before sunrise, the lot’s still black\
A paper sign glows in the window rack\
The door chime rings, then it rings again\
Same faces coming in

Fresh coffee smell and a fryer hum\
Receipts curl up when the orders come\
Marge looks up from the counter file\
Says, “Usual?” with a sideways smile

\[Pre-Chorus\]\
Mud on the boots, badge on the belt\
Scrubs from the night shift, everybody else\
A little bit tired, a little bit cold\
All lined up where the hot cups go

\[Chorus\]\
At the coffee pot at the Marathon\
We all clock in before the dawn\
No one’s higher, no one’s low\
Just steam on the glass and the time moving slow\
City Hall can wait, church bells can chime\
For fifteen minutes, we all stand in line\
At the coffee pot at the Marathon\
That’s where the day gets on

\[Verse 2\]\
The farmer counts change from a damp front pocket\
The teacher laughs at a weather forecast\
Highway paint on a sleeve, salt on a cuff\
A nurse says, “Long night,” and that’s enough

The deputy’s reading yesterday’s rain\
A trucker’s tracing counties on the pane\
Someone holds the door for a stranger in\
And the whole room shifts to let him in

\[Pre-Chorus\]\
Mud on the boots, badge on the belt\
Scrubs from the night shift, everybody else\
A little bit tired, a little bit cold\
All lined up where the hot cups go

\[Chorus\]\
At the coffee pot at the Marathon\
We all clock in before the dawn\
No one’s higher, no one’s low\
Just steam on the glass and the time moving slow\
City Hall can wait, church bells can chime\
For fifteen minutes, we all stand in line\
At the coffee pot at the Marathon\
That’s where the day gets on

\[Bridge\]\
By eight, the parking lot empties out\
One heads south, one heads downtown\
Some stay, some don’t, some never will\
But the cups keep filling up until\
The next one comes through the sliding light\
With rain on the sleeve and sleep in the eyes

\[Chorus\]\
At the coffee pot at the Marathon\
We all clock in before the dawn\
No one’s higher, no one’s low\
Just steam on the glass and the time moving slow\
City Hall can wait, church bells can chime\
For fifteen minutes, we all stand in line\
At the coffee pot at the Marathon\
That’s where the day gets on

\[Outro\]\
Tomorrow morning, the urn will glow\
Marge will ask, “Usual?” and already know\
And somebody’ll hold that door open wide\
For the next one in from the dark outside
