Preserving Culture Through Assimilation I oppose illegal immigration not because I reject immigrants, but because I believe citizenship carries both rights and responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is a willingness to assimilate into the culture, values, and institutions that have helped make the United States successful. Many people come to America seeking opportunities that were unavailable in their home countries. Yet it seems contradictory to leave a nation because of economic instability, corruption, or ineffective government while continuing to support the same cultural or political ideas that contributed to those problems. America has long benefited from immigration, but historically, immigrants were generally expected to adapt to their new country while still honoring their heritage. Assimilation does not require abandoning one’s identity. It means embracing a shared national culture, learning the language, understanding American civic values, and participating in society as Americans first. A nation cannot remain unified if its citizens are divided into separate cultural and political groups that have little in common. If people want to become Americans, they should be willing to adopt the responsibilities that come with that identity. Respecting and preserving a successful culture is not exclusionary; it is a way of ensuring that the opportunities people seek in America continue to exist for future generations.
