  • Maria Hernandez’s Senate Candidacy Announcement Speech

Crowd cheering, holding signs, and chanting "¡Sí se puede!"

    Maria Hernandez:
Thank you! Thank you so much, Houston!
    (pauses for applause)
I stand here today, humbled by the love and support from all of you—the heart of this city, the people who make Texas the vibrant, diverse, and resilient state that it is. For years, I've fought alongside you for the things that matter: affordable healthcare, fair wages, equal opportunities, and dignity for every single Texan. And today, I’m here to announce that our fight is about to get even bigger.

I am officially running for the United States Senate!

    (crowd cheers, applause)

Texas, we are at a crossroads. We have a choice to make about the kind of future we want to build. Will we build walls that divide us, or will we build bridges that bring us together? Will we listen to fearmongers, or will we follow the voices of compassion, of hope, and of justice?

My opponent, Kyle Fitzgerald, has made his choice clear. Last session, he pushed for E-Verify legislation that targeted hard-working Texans—families who have lived in our communities for years, who have contributed to our economy, our culture, and our future. He calls it "security." I call it an attack on working families.

    (crowd boos)

Let me tell you what that E-Verify bill really does: It forces businesses to police their employees, turning them into immigration enforcers instead of job creators. It targets immigrants and stirs fear in our workplaces, making people feel unwelcome and unsafe. Kyle Fitzgerald wants to pit neighbor against neighbor. But Texas, that is not who we are!

    (crowd cheers)

We are a state built on the backs of immigrants. Our families, whether they came here generations ago or just recently, have shaped the story of Texas. From Houston to El Paso, from the farms of the Rio Grande Valley to the tech centers of Austin, immigrants fuel our economy and enrich our communities. And I will not stand by and watch as they are scapegoated and treated like second-class citizens.

    (crowd chants "No more fear!")

Kyle Fitzgerald talks about protecting jobs, but he’s ignoring the real struggles facing Texans. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing. Wages are stagnating. Education is underfunded. Families are working two or three jobs just to make ends meet. And instead of addressing those issues, he’s pushing legislation that divides us.

Well, I’m running because Texas needs real solutions—not fearmongering.

We need healthcare for all Texans. We need affordable prescription drugs. We need an education system that works for every child, no matter their zip code. And we need a living wage, because no Texan should have to work 60 hours a week and still struggle to put food on the table.

    (applause)

When I say I will fight for working families, I mean ALL families—Texan families, immigrant families, Black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American. ALL of us deserve to be treated with dignity. ALL of us deserve an equal shot at the American Dream. That’s what I’ve been fighting for my whole life, and that’s what I’ll continue to fight for in the U.S. Senate.

    (crowd cheers)

This campaign is about more than just beating Kyle Fitzgerald. It’s about standing up for what’s right. It’s about rejecting the politics of fear, and embracing the politics of hope and progress. We can build a better Texas, a more just Texas, where every person—no matter where they come from, who they love, or what language they speak—has the opportunity to thrive.

    (crowd cheers)

I know the road ahead won’t be easy. There will be attacks. There will be challenges. But I believe in the power of people. I believe in the power of communities coming together to demand a government that works for them—not against them. We’ve seen it happen before. We’ve seen movements rise up and transform this country.

So, today, I’m asking you to join me.

Join me in building a movement for justice, for equality, for every person in Texas who has ever been told they don't belong. Join me in saying “¡Basta ya!” Enough of the fear. Enough of the division. It’s time to come together and build a Texas that works for EVERYONE.

    (crowd cheers and claps)

We’ve got a long journey ahead of us, but I know, with your help, with your energy, and with your passion, we will win. Together, we will make history. Together, we will create the future we deserve.

So let’s get to work, Texas! ¡Viva Texas, viva el pueblo, y viva la justicia! Thank you!

(crowd erupts into cheers and chants as Maria raises her fist)
