“Maria Hernandez says that education in our state is underfunded. She’s right. But the difference between me and her is I’ve actually done something about it. As a State Legislator, I introduced the Texas School Funding Improvement Act to increase public school funding in Texas across the board. It increases the basic allotment, which is the per-student funding each district receives. It increases the school safety allotment so that we can finally get an SRO in every school. It increases salaries for teachers and other school personnel. It increases funding for vocational programs so that our kids leave high school with the skills they need to start a career. And it helps pay for all this by eliminating STAAR tests that aren’t federally mandated, reducing the nearly $100 million annual cost the state bears for administering these tests.
“After spending 20 years in the high school ranks as a teacher and football coach, I understand how important public schools are to our culture and our communities. Go to any high school football stadium in the State of Texas on a Friday night in the Fall and you will know exactly what I’m talking about. That is why as your Senator, I will continue to invest in our public schools and our children. I will push for a lot of the same things I pushed for in the State Legislature – stuff like more funding for vocational education to make sure our students leave high school prepared to start a career and more funding for school security to ensure that our schools are always a safe place for our kids.
“Texas needs a Senator who will do more than just talk about this. Talking about it won’t give our students the tools they need. I have a track record on this issue that you can trust and a plan on Day 1 to deliver results for our state.”
