“Howdy! It’s great to be here today in Houston. Today I want to talk about criminal justice reform. Obviously, in any society, there is going to be crime. It’s unavoidable. There are going to be bad apples that do bad things, and that’s why we can never defund the police like some extremists want to do. But on the other hand, we can’t let the police run wild and do whatever they want. We want to keep Texans safe, but we have to do it in a compassionate way.
“I’m sure all of you remember George Floyd. It was my first year as the Head Football Coach at UTSA, and just like in every other college football locker room in America, a lot of our players were really shook up about it. I did some research about George Floyd and of course learned that he grew up here in Houston and played football at Yates High School. I realized that this could have happened to one of the players I coached in high school or in college.
“That is why as a State Legislator, I introduced legislation to provide grants to local law enforcement agencies for the purposes of developing community policing initiatives. Community policing is a collaborative approach to law enforcement that aims to prevent crime by building trust between the community and police. It recognizes that law enforcement cannot always act in a heavy-handed way. Like any public institution, it must earn the people’s trust.
“As your Senator, I will continue to support community policing. I will do whatever I can to keep you and your family safe in a compassionate way. By funding community policing and related training for our police officers, we can prevent what happened to George Floyd from happening again.”
