Calloway '24 Presidential Campaign
Presidential Announcement Speech by Mary Calloway-Kincaid Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, Detroit, Michigan 2:00 pm on Friday Local School Band starts playing Living For the City by Stevie Wonder as Ethan Kincaid walks onto the stage Ladies and gentlemen, family, friends, and my fellow Michiganders, What a remarkable gathering we have today! I stand before you filled with gratitude and pride as we come together to support my mother, Mary Calloway-Kincaid, in her bid for the presidency. As many of you know, my journey has taken me through many paths, and I have always been inspired by the unwavering dedication and determination of my mother. Today, I want to share a little about who she is, not just as a politician, but as a person and a mother. From her early days as a criminal defense attorney to her time serving as a judge, governor, and senator, my mother has always fought for what is right. She has worked tirelessly for the people of Michigan and beyond, never wavering in her commitment to justice, equality, and progress. Her experience is vast, but what truly sets her apart is her profound empathy. She understands the struggles that families face every day because she has lived them. I have seen firsthand the late nights she has spent working, the phone calls she has taken from constituents, and the heart she puts into every decision she makes. As a mother, she has always taught me the importance of perseverance and standing up for what you believe in. She has shown me that true leadership comes from listening and understanding the needs of others. As I reflect on my own journey, from being a registered nurse to earning my medical degree, I realize how interconnected our lives are. Each patient I cared for reminded me of the broader community we serve, and it is this sense of service that I carry with me every day. My mother embodies that same spirit of service. She is driven by a vision for a better future—a future where families are supported, where healthcare is accessible, and where every child has the opportunity to thrive. In this campaign, we are not just looking to the past; we are Going Forward, Standing United. Together, we can build a future where every voice is heard, where every individual matters, and where progress is not just a slogan but a reality. To my fellow supporters: your presence here today signifies the strength of our unity. Together, we can create a movement that transcends political divides. We can create a movement that lifts up our communities and propels us into a future filled with hope. I want to take a moment to acknowledge my family—my children, Sophia and Manuel—who inspire me every day, and by beautiful fiancée María. They remind me of the importance of compassion and resilience, just as my mother has always reminded me. I am so proud of the legacy she is building, not just for us, but for every generation to come. As we move forward, let’s do so with purpose and determination. Let’s stand united in our vision for a better tomorrow. Thank you for your support, and thank you for believing in my mother, Mary Calloway-Kincaid. Together, we can make history! Now, it is my great honor as her favorite and oldest child, people laugh, to introduce a woman who has dedicated her life to public service, a champion for our communities, and a loving mother—Mary Calloway-Kincaid! Rock Steady by Aretha Franklin begins to be play as Senator Calloway-Kincaid walks in and hugs her son and proceeds to the podium Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed friends, my wonderful family, Detroiters and beyond, Today, I stand before you in this beautiful amphitheater, named after the incomparable Aretha Franklin—a true icon whose voice inspired generations and whose legacy lives on in every corner of our beloved country. As I look out at all of you today, I see the heart and soul of America. I see hardworking men and women who rise each day to make a difference, to contribute to their families, and to build a better future for our children. You inspire me, and you remind me of why I have dedicated my life to public service. I was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on December 31, 1957, to a mother who was a nurse and a father who was a prosecutor. I grew up with the values of hard work, integrity, and community service deeply instilled in me. I have spent my life fighting for justice, equity, and opportunity—first as a criminal defense attorney, then as a judge, a congresswoman, the governor of our great state, and now a United States Senator. Throughout these years, my commitment to public service has been unwavering, and today, I ask for your support in taking that commitment to the highest office in the land. With that it is with deep pride and humility that I announce my candidacy for President of the United States. As I embark on this journey, I carry with me the spirit of my late father, Henry Calloway—who was part of the molding of beliefs in a fair economy for all Americans. For too long, our economic system has catered to the wealthiest few, leaving hardworking Americans struggling to make ends meet. It’s time to change that narrative. Together, we will build an economy that reflects the needs and aspirations of every American, not just those with deep pockets. I envision an America where small businesses thrive. I pledge to implement policies that provide tax breaks and incentives for our local enterprises, empowering them to create jobs and stimulate our communities. I will establish grant programs and low-interest loans to support startups, especially in underserved areas. But we must also be responsible stewards of our nation’s resources. I will work tirelessly to reduce the national deficit while maintaining essential services and investments. Middle and lower-income families deserve tax relief, and my administration will prioritize policies that keep more of your hard-earned money in your pockets. As your president, I will ensure government accountability. We will initiate audits of every governmental department to eliminate wasteful spending and promote transparency. Your taxpayer dollars will be used efficiently, fostering public trust in our institutions. Together, we can achieve energy independence. I will prioritize the transition to renewable energy sources, creating green jobs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. We will support innovative technologies that position America as a leader in sustainable energy solutions. And as we work towards a fair economy, we must also address our justice system. As a former officer of the court, I believe in reforming our justice system to prioritize rehabilitation and successful re-entry into society. I will work to end the privatization of prisons, focusing on rehabilitation rather than profit. We will advocate for universal background checks to enhance public safety while respecting the Second Amendment. Housing is a fundamental right for every American. It’s time to break down the barriers that prevent individuals and families from securing safe and affordable homes. I will hold financial institutions accountable and provide generous tax credits for first-time homebuyers. Our national strategy to address homelessness will be comprehensive and compassionate, ensuring that every American has a place to call home. Education is the key to opportunity. Every child in this nation deserves access to a high-quality education. We will raise educator salaries, guarantee resources for all students, and invest in our public schools. We will ensure that teachers are supported and valued because they are the architects of our children’s futures. I also recognize the vital role of rural communities in our nation. We must empower these communities by creating jobs and opportunities, expanding broadband access, and ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. As your president, I will fight for comprehensive healthcare for all Americans. No one should ever have to choose between their health and their basic needs. We will strengthen rural healthcare, invest in mental health services, and combat the opioid crisis with a comprehensive strategy that supports treatment and recovery. In foreign policy, we must adopt a responsible leadership approach. Our military engagement must prioritize the well-being of our service members while advocating for human rights and global cooperation. We will bring our troops home safely and focus on building a more peaceful world through diplomacy and partnership. Lastly, we must honor the sacrifices of our veterans. They have put their lives on the line for our freedoms, and it is our duty to ensure they receive the healthcare and support they deserve. As I embark on this journey, I ask for your trust, your support, and your voices. Together, we will make American great for all Americans. Together, we will ensure a fair economy, a justice system focused on rehabilitation, and access to quality education and healthcare for every American. Together, we will build a nation where every voice is heard, every need is met, and every dream is within reach. Thank you, Detroit! Thank you, Michigan! Together, let us rise and work towards a brighter future for all Americans! A lady and a children’s choir sing Only in America by Jay and the Americans. Her husband, Randy Kincaid, embraces her after speech. -
