State Legislator Anthony D’Savauchi Expected to Suspend Gubernatorial Campaign
COLUMBIA, S.C. — State Rep. Anthony Romeo D’Savauchi is expected to announce the suspension of his longshot campaign for Governor of South Carolina, according to multiple sources familiar with the decision.
D’Savauchi, a 41-year-old combat Marine veteran and former federal prosecutor, launched his gubernatorial bid earlier this year positioning himself as a bipartisan reformer with crossover appeal. While his campaign drew attention for its focus on public safety, healthcare, and retirement security, allies say the uphill political and financial realities of a statewide race ultimately shaped the decision.
“This was never about ego,” one adviser said. “It was about making the case and building something sustainable. Anthony believes in timing and strategy.”
In a statement expected later this week, D’Savauchi is anticipated to emphasize that suspending the campaign does not signal an end to his political ambitions. Instead, he plans to continue serving in public office and is exploring future opportunities, including potential federal and state level races.
Sources close to D’Savauchi say he is also considering a move to Pennsylvania, where he has personal and professional ties, to evaluate a possible run in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District. The seat is expected to become open after Rep. Miles Peale, a Republican, announced his intention to seek a U.S. Senate seat.
If D’Savauchi were to pursue a bid in PA 01, it would represent a significant shift geographically and politically. The district is considered competitive, with a history of close general elections and strong turnout. Political analysts note that D’Savauchi’s background as a veteran and prosecutor could resonate in such a race, though residency and timing would remain key factors.
For now, D’Savauchi is expected to return his focus to legislative duties in South Carolina, where he has remained active on bipartisan public safety and healthcare initiatives.
“Public service is not about one race,” D’Savauchi has said previously. “It is about showing up when and where you can make the biggest difference.”
No formal announcement has yet been made, but a campaign update is expected in the coming days.
