Storm Execute Early, Hold Firm Late in 21–20 Season-Opening Win
The Tampa Bay Storm opened their DFL season with a 21–20 win over Richmond, showing both early precision and late-game resilience.
After a defensive stop to begin the game, the Storm offense found its rhythm immediately, scoring touchdowns on three straight drives. Marches of 80, 68, and 62 yards gave Tampa Bay a 21–14 lead and showcased the identity Head Coach Alonzo Mercer emphasized: disciplined, methodical execution.
Quarterback Christian Andrews led the way, completing 17 of 28 passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover. His connection with wide receiver Jamir Cooks proved decisive, as Cooks totaled 98 yards and all three receiving touchdowns. Tyler Bannerman added 67 yards, consistently contributing in key moments, while running back Trevion Sutter provided balance with 85 rushing yards on 23 carries.
Richmond answered with sustained drives of its own, tying the game twice and eventually closing the gap to 21–20 late in the fourth quarter. From that point on, the game shifted.
Over the final possessions, the Storm defense held firm, limiting Richmond to field goals and forcing critical stops to preserve the lead. Despite the offense stalling late, Tampa Bay maintained composure in key moments.
“It’s about execution and finishing,” Mercer said. “We did enough of both.”
The performance reflected a team still developing, but grounded in structure, balance, and discipline.
It wasn’t perfect, but it was a strong first step.
The Storm move to 1–0.
