Lila Grant, addressing the team and press after the Week 1 win — Bennett Stadium, locker room overflow to podium
"Sit down. Breathe. I want you to actually hear this, because I don't want this feeling to pass us by.
One month ago, this team didn't exist. Just a name, a stadium, and strangers who'd never taken a snap together. Everyone else had their story ready — nice try, expansion team, see you next year. And this city, which didn't have to believe in us, bought tickets anyway. Showed up at The Peak and on the road in Richmond and said, prove it.
Today we did. We didn't just win. We rewrote the record book.
Records. Plural.
Evander Holt — 282 passing yards. Single-game record. Broken.
Gregory Johnson — eighteen catches. Reception record AND receiving yards record. Same afternoon.
Lawson Pike — everybody said two million dollars was crazy. He tied the rushing touchdown record. Five, in one game. Money well spent, and I'll keep saying it.
And Dallas Key. This offseason, we were out there trying to move him. Trying to find someone better. Through every one of those conversations, Dallas never said a word, just kept showing up and doing the work. Today he broke the career receptions record. Ten catches, a hundred and thirteen yards, and a message to everyone — including me — who didn't think he had more to give. He does. He always did. Dallas, that's your team out there tonight. You earned it.
Records, plural, on opening day, against a team that fought us both halves and never made it easy.
So revel in this. All of you. The players who bled for it today, the staff who built this from nothing in thirty days, and every person in this city who put their faith down on a team that hadn't played a single game yet. We told you Denver doesn't do small. Today, we showed you exactly what that means.
This is one game. Fourteen more, then whatever comes after. But remember how this felt — this isn't the ceiling we're chasing. This is the floor we're building on.
Enjoy tonight. Tomorrow, we go be great again.
Let's go, Summit."
