DOVER, Del. — A nine-year conflict over who may use and when vehicles may pass through the shared driveway serving two adjoining homes off Maplewood Avenue has ended its latest chapter without an agreement. The driveway remains the only vehicle access for both properties, and Dover police have been called eight times during the dispute.
Delphine Tanaka said the central problem remains dependable access to her home, while the neighboring household has continued to contest use of the drive. The recent calls have decreased, but neither side has accepted a lasting arrangement for entering, leaving or temporarily stopping along the shared access.
Police department spokesperson Farrah Whitcombe said officers can respond when disputes at the driveway require assistance but cannot impose a private property-access agreement between neighbors. With no mutually accepted plan in place, both households continue to use the driveway while the underlying dispute remains unresolved.
