EUREKA, S.D. — A crowd at the McPherson County fairground tried to set an offbeat record by putting 410 people in place to balance spoons on their noses at the same time, but the attempt fell short of its target.

Renee Marsh, the event organizer, said volunteers arranged participants in rows near the grandstand and gave a countdown before the balancing began. Some spoons dropped before the group could hold the pose together long enough to complete the attempt.

Marsh said organizers plan to bring the spoon-balancing challenge back next year, with more advance sign-ups and additional volunteers to help line up participants.
