Peniamina Secures Culinary Union Endorsement, Commits to PRO Act on First Day

Paletuatoa Peniamina has received the Culinary Union's endorsement and vowed to sign the PRO Act immediately upon taking office, aiming to enhance workers' rights.

Paletuatoa Peniamina announced today that he has received the endorsement of the Culinary Union, one of the largest labor unions in the United States. In conjunction with this endorsement, Peniamina pledged to sign the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act on his first day in office. The PRO Act aims to bolster workers' rights to organize and engage in collective bargaining. In his statement, Peniamina emphasized the significance of the PRO Act, describing it as "the most important piece of labor legislation in generations." He highlighted its provisions to protect the right to organize, crack down on union-busting practices, and ensure that workers can form unions without fear of retaliation. "I'll sign the PRO Act on my first day in office. Not my first week. Not my first month. Day one," Peniamina declared, underscoring his commitment to labor rights. The Culinary Union, which has a long history of advocating for better wages and benefits for its members, expressed its support for Peniamina's labor agenda. Peniamina noted, "They know that when workers stand together, they win. That's the fight I'm in. That's the fight I'll win." In addition to the PRO Act, Peniamina outlined several key policy initiatives aimed at improving conditions for workers. These include raising the federal minimum wage to $17 per hour, indexed to inflation, and eliminating the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers. He also proposed allowing workers to form unions through a majority sign-up process, bypassing mandatory secret ballot elections. Further, Peniamina's plan includes strengthening the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation to protect multi-employer pension plans and addressing the issue of worker misclassification, which often leaves workers without necessary benefits. The endorsement from the Culinary Union and Peniamina's commitment to the PRO Act come at a time when labor rights and economic issues are at the forefront of national discourse. As the political landscape remains polarized, Peniamina's labor-focused agenda may resonate with voters concerned about workers' rights and economic stability.
