River Bytheway Proposes "Virginia Teachers First" Plan to Support Educators

River Bytheway, Republican gubernatorial candidate, announces a plan aimed at enhancing support for Virginia teachers through new initiatives focused on growth, safety, and financial relief.

FAIRFAX, VA – Republican gubernatorial candidate River Bytheway has unveiled his “Virginia Teachers First” plan, aimed at making Virginia a leading state for classroom teachers. The announcement was made during a roundtable discussion with educators in Fairfax County, where Bytheway emphasized the need for professional growth, school safety, and financial relief for teachers without increasing taxes on working families. Bytheway stated, “Great schools start with great teachers, and right now Virginia is losing too many of our best educators to burnout, bureaucracy, and better-paying jobs across state lines.” He pledged to advocate for teachers' respect, resources, and opportunities if elected governor. The plan includes three key initiatives: 1. **The Teacher Excellence Initiative**: This program aims to provide stipends for teachers who earn advanced certifications, fund mentorship pairings, and offer flexible leadership training options. It also encourages school districts to develop career ladders for veteran teachers, allowing them to transition into roles such as master teachers or instructional coaches while remaining in the classroom. 2. **Safer Schools with Teacher and Community Voices**: Bytheway proposes dedicated state funding for security upgrades, including reinforced doors and modern camera systems, along with active-shooter training. He emphasized that every school safety plan should be developed by a local advisory board that includes teachers, parents, and students, stating, “Safety and inclusivity are not mutually exclusive.” 3. **Real Financial Relief for Educators**: The plan introduces a $500 refundable state tax credit for teachers’ out-of-pocket classroom supplies. Additionally, it includes a pilot program for down-payment assistance and low-interest mortgages for teachers in high-cost areas like Northern Virginia. Bytheway remarked, “No teacher should have to choose between stocking their classroom and paying their own bills.” Bytheway concluded, “These are practical, fully fundable solutions that put teachers ahead of politics.” He expressed pride in standing with educators across Virginia who seek recognition for their impactful work. This announcement comes as Bytheway continues to build his campaign platform ahead of the gubernatorial election.
