Senator Jim Alton Addresses Recent Reporting on Family Employment and Economic Initiatives
Senator Jim Alton responds to recent media coverage regarding his tenure as County Executive and family employment with Keystone Advanced Components.
Senator Jim Alton issued a statement addressing recent media reports concerning his time as County Executive in Westmoreland County and the employment of a family member with Keystone Advanced Components. In his statement, Alton emphasized his commitment to job preservation during a challenging economic period for the region. He stated, “When our region was losing jobs and families were packing up and leaving, I made it my mission to fight for every opportunity to keep people working close to home.” He characterized the Keystone Advanced Components project as a vital initiative aimed at economic survival rather than political maneuvering. Alton defended his actions during his tenure, asserting that he would not apologize for advocating for faster decision-making in times of crisis. He remarked, “Anyone who’s actually governed during a crisis understands that leadership isn’t passive.” The senator also addressed concerns regarding a family member's employment with Keystone Advanced Components, which occurred months after the deal was finalized. Alton clarified, “I did not hire them, I did not arrange their employment, and I did not benefit financially.” He noted that his family member is an adult capable of making their own career choices and expressed that public service should not require family members to alter their lives significantly. Reflecting on the standards of governance, Alton acknowledged that some may prefer more separation between decision-makers and outcomes. However, he maintained that the appropriate rules were followed during his time in office, and disclosures were made to benefit the community. Alton concluded his statement by asserting his belief in the importance of proactive governance, stating, “What I won’t do is pretend that governing is the same as checking boxes, or that helping people stay employed is something to be ashamed of.” He emphasized that if his approach to leadership is viewed as disqualifying, it should ultimately be up to voters to decide their preferred leadership style. This statement comes amid ongoing discussions regarding Alton's political career and recent challenges he faces in the Senate race, including a challenge from State Representative Nathan Landberger.
