Engineers have cleared the remaining structure of the 48-year-old Harbor Lantern Building as safe following the failure of one of its balconies near Crescent City’s waterfront commercial district. The clearance concludes the focused inspection that followed the collapse, in which no injuries were reported.
Building inspector Grant Okonjo said the examination centered on moisture damage found in the failed balcony’s exterior attachment area and on nearby facade connection points. Inspectors retained debris from the failed balcony for examination and kept the ground-level area beneath it clear while documenting those connections. The safety finding applies to the building that remains after the balcony failure.
