Senators Vinachelli, Granger, Duplantis, and Donnelly (for themselves and others,) submit the following

Resolution

Honoring the life, service, and memory of Edan Alexander, who tragically died in Hamas captivity, and reaffirming the United States’ commitment to Israel, combating terrorism, and supporting the protection of innocent lives and human dignity.

Whereas Edan Alexander, a dual Israeli-American citizen, born in Tel Aviv, and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, bravely served his country in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), embodying the values of courage, dedication, and duty;

Whereas Edan Alexander was taken captive by Hamas terrorists during an attack on October 7, 2023, while he was serving in the Golani Brigade’s 51st Battalion; 

Whereas Edan Alexander’s life was tragically cut short while held in captivity by Hamas, an organization designated as a terrorist group by the United States;

Whereas his captivity and subsequent death represent a stark reminder of the horrific toll of terrorism and the indiscriminate targeting of innocent lives, including soldiers and civilians;

Whereas Edan Alexander’s dual citizenship reflects the close bond between the United States and Israel, a relationship founded on shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law;

Whereas the United States stands firmly against the taking of hostages, acts of terrorism, and violations of human rights;

Whereas Edan Alexander’s service and sacrifice deserve recognition and remembrance by the United States Congress as part of the enduring commitment to justice, peace, and the defense of liberty;

Resolved, that the United States Senate—

1. Honors the life and service of Edan Alexander, recognizing his commitment and sacrifice as a member of the Israel Defense Forces;
2. Expresses its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, sharing in their grief and mourning this tragic loss;
3. Condemns in the strongest possible terms the actions of Hamas in taking hostages and engaging in acts of terror that violate international law and human decency;
4. Reaffirms the unwavering support of the United States for Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens from acts of terrorism and violence;
5. Calls upon the international community to ensure that those responsible for terrorism, hostage-taking, and violations of human rights are held accountable; and
6. Encourages continued efforts by the United States government to strengthen its cooperation with Israel in combating terrorism, protecting innocent lives, and pursuing justice for heroes like Edan Alexander.

Resolved further, that the United States Senate honors Edan Alexander as a symbol of bravery and resilience, and as a reminder of the shared values that bind the United States and Israel in the fight against terrorism and the defense of human dignity.
